MGS grade 6 students enjoyed a magnificent 12 degree temperature for their winter excursion. They had a cross-country skiing lesson with instructors from Héritage St-Bernard. They tried the sport on the trails at the Centre Fernand Séguin. They also participated in an obstacle course and enjoyed tubing down the fantastic toboggan hill! Their feedback was very positive, and some will definitely be returning with friends or family!
Our Grade 6 students participated in Trades and Motion. It began with a visit from Ms. Marilou, who shared valuable information about the various educational pathways available through Continuing Education. On March 27, students visited the NOVA Career Centre, where they explored the different trades programs offered within NFSB Continuing Education. Through hands-on activities and guided exploration, students learned about programs available at the three nearby adult centres.
Thank you to the amazing staff from HAECC, CVCEC, and NOVA, this experience was both memorable and engaging for our students! Everyone truly enjoyed the opportunity to learn, explore, and envision future possibilities.
I Love to Read Week at MGS never disappoints! The week kicked off with school wide Book Title Bingo, a favourite M.G.S. tradition. From there, the week was filled with mystery intercom readers, daily D.E.A.R. Time (drop everything and read), class visits to the relaxing Reading Lounge-built on the gym stage, and a book cover design contest that awarded two students from each participating class with posters and brand new books! Not to mention the exciting Scholastic Book Fair that brought students and families together with some of the latest and greatest new literature titles! Sales from this fair will bring new books to our classrooms, the library and our students.
Thank-you to staff, students and families for making the fair and I Love to Read Week at M.G.S. such a huge success. Special thanks to our volunteers Miss Sandy, Miss Karen and Miss Debbie for their support at the Book Fair and to Miss Rachelle for lending us the gymnasium and organizing outdoor Phys. Ed. classes. Great things happen when our Mary Gardner community comes together!
In January, the Sparkle Club was launched for Grade 3 and 4 girls, with support from four Grade 5 leaders, creating a safe and empowering space rooted in kindness, confidence, friendship, and leadership. Through orientation activities, students explored respectful communication, navigating friendships, and making positive social choices while learning the meaning behind the Sparkle Pledge, club values, and leadership badges.
The girls demonstrated thoughtful participation, honesty, and enthusiasm while committing to carrying these values both inside and outside the club. As the club moved into February, Sparkle values were brought to life through Black History Month and Kindness Week initiatives, including collaborative art, student-led acts of kindness, and the Kindness Bloom Campaign. The month concluded with a joyful celebration featuring kindness outreach, music, movement, and appreciation for the girls’ consistent commitment and leadership.
Sparkle Club continues to shine as a group dedicated to strengthening friendships, promoting empathy, and spreading kindness throughout the school community.
Throughout February, our students engaged in creative and meaningful experiences Black History Month.
Grade 2 students in rooms 210 and 1/213 created beautiful Valentine’s artwork inspired by American artist Alma Woodsey Thomas, exploring pattern, colour, and artistic expression while learning about her contributions to art.
We were also grateful to Umoja Productions for visiting our school to introduce students to Stepping, while sharing important messages and learning connected to Black History Month. Their energy and knowledge provided an engaging and memorable experience for our students.
A special thank you to Ms. Angela and her HSB students for visiting a few of our classes, where they read stories together and supported the creation of a wonderful Black History Month craft. This meaningful collaboration fostered connection, leadership, and shared learning across grade levels.
These experiences helped deepen our students’ understanding of creativity, culture, history, and community, and we are thankful to everyone who supported and enriched this month of learning.
